Habemus Papam!

+ fr. michael white blog May 16, 2025

On Thursday, May 8, around midday, some of our parish staff interrupted a previously scheduled staff meeting when news quickly reached us that there was white smoke billowing from the Sistine Chapel. The smoke itself an unexpectedly moving symbol of continuity, tradition, and the enduring mission of the Church.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, is a man shaped by profound experience. Born in Chicago, he carries the heart of an American, but his soul is deeply rooted in the global Church. His years as a missionary, pastor, and bishop in Peru have given him a unique perspective - one that bridges North and South America, and by extension, diverse cultures and experiences. That dual heritage is something we can all admire and feel proud of.

His choice of the name Leo XIV tells us something important. It’s a tribute to Pope Leo XIII, a pontiff known for addressing social issues and advocating for worker's rights at the turn of the 20th century. It signals that Leo XIV, like his predecessor, will likely focus on social justice, inclusion, and the Church’s mission to stand with the marginalized. It’s both a nod to tradition and a signal of forward thinking.

In his first address, Pope Leo spoke about unity, charity, and compassion. He emphasized the importance of building bridges—between nations, communities, and even within the Church itself. It’s a message that resonates with us here at Nativity, where we’re constantly working to create a space that’s welcoming and inclusive.

As we continue to reflect on his election, I think it’s important to consider how we can follow his example in our own lives. Let’s take his call to build bridges to heart. Whether it’s reaching out to someone who feels isolated, or standing up for what is right, we can be part of the change that Pope Leo envisions.

Meanwhile, let’s pray for Pope Leo XIV as he takes on the monumental task of shepherding the global Church. Let’s pray for ourselves, that we may be inspired by his leadership to live our faith boldly and compassionately. And let’s pray in thanksgiving to God that we have a pope!
